Though the building and decoration of the Palace was carried out by a succession of architects, its interiors and architecture show a great unity of style; the Palace's decor is completely integrated with its architecture. Its vast art collections won the Palace world renown.
Articles of ivory and amber
The collection of French painting in the Great Palace is not numerous, but it includes very famous names, such as S. Bourdon, N. Vleughels, P. Mignard, G. Gouvener, K. Van Loo, J. B. Griez, and H. Robert. The painting of the 17th century for the long time decorated the private study of Maria Feodorovna - "the Little Lantern". The canvases are small in size and reflect religious motives.
"Amour Menacant" by C. Van Loo, 1761, is the most typical work for the collection. Among the twelve masterpieces of H.Robert the most interesting are the four pictures of antique monuments of Rome, image of the Southern France and fantasies named "The Fire of Rome" and "The Triumphal Bridge". They were ordered to the artist during the Paul and Maria's trip over the Europe. Also interesting are two images of Louvre interiors: "The Hall of the Belvedere Apollo" and "The Hall of Laocoon", as they represent the exposition of the famous antiques stolen by Napoleon in Italy.
