THE VALLEY OF PONDS

THE VALLEY OF PONDSThe area was formed by Pietro Gonzaga in 1800-01. Sadly, virtually none of the pastoral-sentimental edifices that once lent such charm to this solitary region have survived. All that remains of such structures as the New and Old Chalets and the Treillage on the Island of Love in the middle of the Pond of Venus are their images in nineteenth century watercolours and pre-revolutionary photographs. The forest tract itself, however, remains picturesque, with its chain of narrow ponds, steep banks and trees reaching up to the sky.
